Sex and intimacy as key elements in marriage is not addressed in hushed tones in Islam. In the Quran andnd various narrations of the Prophet ﷺ, we are explicitly informed of the proper conducts, and etiquettes that guide them.
This is to portray how practical and all-encompassing Islam is as it addresses every aspect of the human existence.
Sex in Islam is a means to many ends. It transcends the fulfillment of physical desires, and Almighty Allaah takes it to a higher level of spirituality. This is reflected in the adhkaar (supplication) associated with it, and the rewards that couples acquire when they engage in the act.

It was reported from Abu Dharr that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“In the sexual intercourse of anyone of you there is reward.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, when any of us fulfills his desire, will he have a reward for that?” He (peace be upon him) said: “Do you not see that if he were to do it in a haraam manner, he would be punished for that? So if he does it in a halal manner, he will be rewarded.” (Narrated by Muslim, 720)
The above signifies that halal sex is a gateway to even earning the pleasure of Allaah although this doesn’t mean it should solely be seen as an act of worship.
One of the many reasons Allaah has designed sex is to encourage love and actual intimacy between couples, hence, the etiquette of engaging in mental preparation before the major act.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“One of you should not fulfill one’s (sexual) need from his wife like an animal, rather there should be between them foreplay of kissing and words”.
Indeed as Muslims, we are commanded to uphold modesty and bashfulness. However, this commandment is waived completely when it comes to interaction with our spouses. We are encouraged to deploy any and every halal means to ensure that we derive the utmost enjoyment from this blessed act.
Sex is meant to be infinitely enjoyed as much as the limits of Allaah are not transgressed, it is seen as a gift from Allah.
Almighty Allah says: “Your spouses are a garment (comfort, chastity, and protection) for you as you are for them.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:187)
He further says:
“And among His signs is that He has created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may live in tranquillity with them; and He has created love and mercy between you. Verily, in that are signs for those who reflect.” (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21)
If painful sex is what you’ve been enduring because you’ve been made to believe that that’s how sex is meant to be then you’ve been wrong and are depriving yourself of a lot of benefits. Sex is meant to help you release your feel good hormones and derive pleasure; it’s a blessing from Allaah for the married and gifts are delights to the soul, not otherwise!
